James Disney's work is soulful. It is a journey of the heart that spans something beyond even his own understanding. This body of work is strongly grounded in iconology, with references to his own spiritual questions and growth. There is a lifetime of experience in each composition. They are inspired by the Bible's epic stories, and are indeed intertwined with his own life.

Disney has spent years exploring the rich tradition of the icon, which in turn led him to the study of "Mische". The credit for this particular style and technique is given to the early Flemish painters of the 1400's. "During this time period, Artists such as Robert Campin, Jan Van Eyck, and Roger Van Der Weyden were struggling to find a way to add more detail to their paintings. They achieved this by using a mix of oil and egg tempers, which also delivered new possibilities in transparent color to rival that of stained glass windows."

James Disney is a self-taught artist. It has been a blend of information, experimentation, discipline, and passion that has propelled the artist to paint at this technical level. He has achieved numerous awards and recognition for his watercolors and "Mische" compositions.

James grew up near Washington, D.C., with its wonderful museums for inspiration. He received a degree in philosophy from John Hopkins University and a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary. Currently, Rev. Disney is Pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buffalo, Minnesota, where he has lived the past 14 years, serving his congregation and working at his art.

"My art is a kind of spiritual conversation with God. My prayer is to enrich the life of the church through my art."
